    Short Description of the Area: NWS Yorktown is located along the York River, which flows out to the Chesapeake Bay, in southern coastal Virginia. It is in an area historically known as Hampton Roads, which is still used today to describe the cities on the peninsula between the James and York Rivers, which include Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach. These communities are densely populated and also fairly densely packed with military bases which can make traffic pretty congested, especially at rush hours.
